BMW 230i — Driving fun in a small package

MotorwayAmerica.com

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(June 12, 2022) The last five BMW vehicles we've tested all had the performance M in their name and two were actually full-throated M performance cars — the M4 Competition Coupe and the X3 M, both sporting 503 horsepower — so it might be surprising to learn we were blown away after driving the new-for-2022 230i coupe. That's the base 2-Series with a turbocharged 4-cylinder making — Yikes — just 255 horsepower. Never mind the rather paltry hp rating, we really liked the way the little coupe handled and performed. We could own one and be very happy heading out for wherever each day.

Jaguar’s F-Pace R-Dynamic S — Dynamic? Yes!

By David Boldt

(June 6, 2022) It was in 1922 that what we now know as Jaguar was formed as the Swallow Sidecar Company, building motorcycle sidecars before offering bodies for passenger cars and, not too long after, the whole automotive shebang as S.S. Cars. Given that 2022, on some level, is Jaguar’s centennial, I reference Swallow because, for founder William Lyons, today’s all-consuming focus on the SUV — begun by Jaguar with the belated intro of its F-Pace compact crossover in 2015 — would be hard to, uh…swallow.

(June 6, 2022) The S-Class has long been the flagship vehicle for the Mercedes-Benz luxury lineup and a case can be made that it also sits at the top of its class in the auto world — period. U.S. News & World Report magazine, which doesn’t do original automotive reviews but bases its rankings on an analysis of critiques from several sources, rates the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class No. 1 among vehicles it classifies as “Super Luxury Cars.”

Kia Niro EV doesn't care about gas mileage, long commutes

By Casey Williams

I have a pretty long commute – about 35 miles each way.  And as I noticed while picking up soda at the gas station last weekend, 87 octane was $4.65 per gallon.  Premium and diesel were uncomfortably over $5.  I own a Smart car and have test cars most of the time, so gas prices don’t usually affect my budget much, but good-ness that’s expensive.  I let it sink in, then realized I still don’t care because…I’m driving the 2022 Kia Niro EV.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 — Electrification done right

MotorwayAmerica.com

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(June 5, 2022) In automakers' fast and furious rush to turn entire inventories electric, they have done a commendable job building stylish, highly desirable vehicles. We've driven about a half dozen of the new EVs over the past 18 months and have seen first hand how easy it is to fall in love with the new electrification.

Hyundai Kona N — Performance personified

MotorwayAmerica.com

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(May 29, 2022) We've experienced all four Hyundai Kona drivetrains for 2022. And we've saved the most fun setup for last. We agree, the electric version is very fetching — a small crossover we would consider if dipping our toe into the electric pool — but the new performance-minded N version is the most fun. A hoot with 276 horsepower — 286 in an overboost mode — under the hood of a 3,340-pound car.

(May 21, 2022) Mercedes may be late to the party, but it makes a grand entrance to the all-electric vehicle market with the 2022 EQS 580 4MATIC sedan. Spectacular is a word that just doesn’t do it justice. It’s not just a luxurious electric vehicle, it is luxurious vehicle period with a prominent profile and opulent interior. You can even get pillows for the  headrests!

Nissan Kicks has big personality

(May 19, 2022) What kind of car do you really need?  My husband thinks he needs a twin-turbo German rocket wagon to get his kicks, but our budget determines otherwise.  What we need is an affordable compact crossover with style, technology, fuel efficiency, and enough interior space for four and their luggage.  Like many of you, we need a car like the 2022 Nissan Kicks.  It’s the smallest Nissan crossover, but it has a big personality.

Toyota GR86 — A great sports car that just got a whole lot better

(May 19, 2022) If the Toyota GR86 looks somewhat familiar to you it might be because it was formerly known as the Scion FR-S, or the Toyota 86 after Toyota officially discontinued the Scion brand in 2016. Beginning in August of 2017 the 2017 Scion FR-S became a Toyota branded vehicle along with the iA and iM sedans.

Mitsubishi Outlander — A dramatic improvement

MotorwayAmerica.com

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(May 22, 2022) Some might say the designers and engineers at Mitsubishi had no place to go but up when configuring the all-new three-row 2022 Outlander crossover. And after driving the new model, we found they've reached all their goals, turning their flagship vehicle into a competitive entry in the crowded compact/mid-size segment.
