Study finds drivers unaware of how drowsy they really are

(March 18, 2023) WASHINGTON, D.C. — It’s something that most drivers experience but may not realize until it’s too late — feeling drowsy — which plays an under-appreciated role in traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths. Although underreported in government statistics, previous research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has estimated that 16% to 21% of all police-reported fatal vehicle crashes likely involve drowsy driving.

According to GasBuddy’s annul Pump Habits study, 74% of Americans have become more price-conscious at the pump during the last year. However, most drivers are still making crucial mistakes, which can cost them hundreds of dollars per year.

Current gas price hike may be short lived

As heavy EVs proliferate, their weight may be a drag on safety

IIHS discovers some new EVs
may be so heavy they create safety
risk for other vehicles on the road

By Raul Arbelaez

Vice President
Vehicle Research Center, IIHS

(March 10, 2023) How safe are electric vehicles? It’s a question that keeps coming up in different ways in my role overseeing our vehicle crashworthiness evaluations. When we first started testing electric vehicles in 2011, the question referred to fire risk. When damaged, lithium-ion batteries can ignite, and the fires can be extremely hard to put out. As a result, we have special procedures for EV testing, including monitoring the battery’s voltage and temperature and asking our local fire department to be on site
