Autobrake cuts rear-end crash rates for pickups, but few are equipped

(November 16, 2022) Automatic emergency braking (AEB) reduces rear-end crash rates for pickups dramatically, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. But despite the heightened danger they pose to other road users, pickups are less likely to be equipped with the crash avoidance feature than cars or SUVs.

Gas prices dip slightly ahead of Thanksgiving holiday



(November 15, 2022) WASHINGTON, D.C. — The national average for a gallon of gasoline slid three cents in the past week to $3.77. The main reason is the global cost of oil, gasoline’s main ingredient, has been stuck in a narrow price range of $85 to $92 a barrel for several weeks.

Average price for new vehicle remains above $48,000 in October



(November 10, 2022) ATLANTA — The average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States in October was up from September and remains above the $48,000 mark, according to data released today by Kelley Blue Book. The Kelley Blue Book new-vehicle average transaction price (ATP) increased to $48,281 in October, slightly lower than the revised all-time high of $48,301 set in August. October prices rose 0.2% ($187) month over month from September and were up 3.8% ($1,775) year over year from October 2021.

Smartphone apps drive gig workers, parents to distraction



(November 9, 2022) Gig-economy workers are four times as likely as other drivers to use smartphone apps regularly while driving, a new survey from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows. “The explosion of smartphone features and services has not only created new forms of driver distraction, but also a new group of ride share and delivery drivers whose jobs require them to interact with their phones while they’re on the road,” IIHS President David Harkey said.

Shifting into reverse? Gas prices edge higher



(November 8, 2022) WASHINGTON, D.C. — Despite fewer U.S. drivers fueling up, the national average pump price rose four cents over the past week to hit $3.80. Rising oil prices fueled by worries over Russian oil production cuts have renewed concerns about global supplies. But the rise could be short-lived as reports of new Covid-19 restrictions in China signal a potential economic slowdown for the world’s top oil-consuming nation.
