Vintage race cars, motorcycles, dragsters to unite at Mazda Raceway

(February 1, 2018) MONTEREY, Calif.  — The second annual Spring Classic on May 18-20 is shaping up to be a can't-miss event for fans of vintage motorsports. Road racing on two and four wheels and drag racing will all be celebrated this year at Mazda Raceway.

Race cars from the '70s, '80s, and '90s will roar back to life on the iconic Monterey County-owned 11-turn, 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca road course.

The 11 run groups of cars include 1966-1974 Can-Am, 1973-1987 FIA, 1966-1972 Trans-Am 2.5-Liter, 1967-1979 Formula Atlantic, 1974-1994 Stock Cars, 1970-1984 Sports Cars 2-Liter, 1967-1980 Formula Ford, 1990-2007 GTP/LMP/WSC/Daytona Prototype/IMSA GTO, SCCA GT & IMSA RS, 1965-1978 Formula B & 1965-1977 Formula C, and 1955-1961 Sports Cars under 2.0 liters. Entries are still being accepted for each race group at www.MazdaRaceway.com.

One of few events to celebrate historic car and motorcycle racing simultaneously, the Spring Classic has expanded on the Historic Motorcycle Exhibitions that took place in 2017 by adding even more bikes for the on-track exhibitions and paddock show. The Historic Motorcycle area of the paddock will feature vintage moto signage and memorabilia, awards for best display bike and best race bike (per period), and a “Rock Your Leathers" contest.

Vintage racing worlds collide at the Spring Classic with the addition of Nitro Revival. Nitro Revival brings the sights and sounds of the early days of front-engine Top Fuel dragsters back to life with a large lineup of fully restored machines. Cars will be in the paddock during all three days of the Spring Classic.

Drag racing legends will be available for meet-and-greet on Friday night. Nitro Revival will close the show on Saturday with a "Line of Fire" mass fire up on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on the front straight. Nitro Revival also brings Ace's Place Hot Rod Corral with drag racing legend Ed "the Ace" McCulloch and others bringing pre-1973 hot rods and street rods. Classic cars can be registered for the event at NitroRevival.com.

“Everyone who has an interest in motorsports, cars and moving entertainment will enjoy their experience at the Spring Classic that features Nitro Revival,” added Gill Campbell, senior vice president of events at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “There will be something for fans of all types and ages, from sports and open-wheel race cars to historic motorcycles to the high-powered drag racers. It will be a sensory overload.”
