Toyota vs. Honda: Camry edges Accord, CR-V tops RAV4

(January 5, 2011) Despite the continued sales slump at Toyota, the Toyota mid-sized family sedan Camry won the overall sales title as the best-selling car in America for the ninth straight year edging out the Honda Accord.

Although Camry sales were down from 2009 (327,804 vs. 356,824) and were off significantly from 2008 when 436,617 sales were recorded, it held on to edge the Accord which finished with sales of 311,381 units. The Accord was up from 2009 when it sold 290,056 units, but down from 2008 when sales hit 372,789.

In the compact car ranks, the Toyota Corolla recorded sales of 266,082 units to edge out the aging Honda Civic, which finished with sales of 260,218. The Corolla was down from 2009 and 2008 with sales of 296.874 in 2009 and 351,007 in 2008.

The Civic actually gained slightly over 2009 when it sold 259,722 units, but was down by a wide margin from 2008 when sales hit 339,289.

In another Toyota-Honda face off, the compact crossover CR-V outsold the Toyota RAV4, 203,714 to 170,877. The RAV4 actually gained 15.4 percent from 2009 when it had sales of 149,088. The CR-V sold 191,214 units in 2009.

It was the fifth straight year the CR-V was the top-selling sport utility in America.
