Subaru to unveil BRZ sports car in Frankfurt

(September 5, 2011) Subaru will exhibit the Subaru BRZ Prologue — Boxer Sports Car Architecture II — at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Sept. 13.

The BRZ is Subaru's companion to the Toyota FT-86, which will be marketed in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S.

Subaru says the initials BRZ actually stand for something — boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and zenith.

The BRZ architecture employs Subaru’s new platform, built around its key component, the horizontally-opposed boxer engine. Subaru says the newest boxer engine, a 2-liter 4-cylinder, will have direct injection, exclusively designed for the new sports car.

Subaru says the BRZ Prologue will showcase Subaru’s state-of-the-art engineering technology and claims it will deliver a “Pure Handling Delight” driving experience.

The BRZ was unveiled in concept form earlier this year at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show.

The new sports car will probably go on sale as a 2013 model.
