Rare vintage racing car goes to auction in Houston

(October 29, 2016) HOUSTON —  Dan Kruse Classics has announced that one of the rarest of vintage racing cars will go to auction in November. The auction celebrates the greatest race car driver of his era, Sir Stirling Moss. On Nov. 25 the Sir Stirling Moss 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang that Moss drove in vintage competitions from 1993 to 1999 will hit the auction block at the Dan Kruse Classic Classic Car Auction to be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

One must remember, however, this rare automobile not only boasts the association with Sir Stirling Moss but also that of another legendary racer, Carroll Shelby himself. To offer a car associated with two of the most iconic racers of all time is unprecedented. The historical significance of this vehicle is unrivaled.

In an era when generalist drivers prevailed, it was Stirling Moss who proved his versatility driving 84 different makes of cars throughout his career.

Moss won 212 of the 529 races he entered including 16 Formula One Grand Prix races and the legendary Mille Miglia. This 1966 Shelby GT350 could not offer more of an endorsement of any kind for any competition car than that of being chosen by Moss. Moss purchased the vehicle from then Aston Martin owner Peter Livanos of Greenwich. He first raced the car in the Targa Tasmania, after which he used it in many races and tours in both North America and Europe.

Cobra Automotive, Shelby’s race shop, converted the car and then sent it directly to Tasmania for Moss to drive. It was a high performance car against all serious vintage competitors and Moss was quoted as saying it was his “favorite car of all time” for historic racing.

The Stirling Moss 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang is in excellent race-ready condition, is blindingly fast and dependable and is extremely rare. It is listed in the Shelby Registry, as one would expect for a car driven by such a legendary racer. The car also comes with historic documentation, interviews and video.

“I can’t think of words adequate enough to describe the rarity of this extraordinary 1966 Sir Stirling Moss GT350 Shelby being offered at our next auction in Houston,” said Dan Kruse, president of Dan Kruse Classics. “You can almost hear the engine revving up and the cheers of the crowds, it’s that special.”
