Petty’s Garage Custom Mustang leads sales at Texas auction

(September 24, 2015) WALWORTH, Wis. — Mecum Auctions’ sale this past weekend in Dallas achieved an overall total of $24,809,893 sold with the auction’s highest hammer price claimed by a 2015 Mustang GT customized by Petty’s Garage and benefiting Paralyzed Veterans of America.

In just four days, 699 cars changed hands at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. The large and fervent crowd kept energy at a high all weekend and led to strong sales in the Lone Star State.

Saturday saw the auction’s highest sales with all top 10 sellers gaveling that day along with the Petty’s Garage Custom Mustang which sold two different times in one day. Presented on the block by seven-time NASCAR champion “The King” Richard Petty, the Mustang first brought a $330,000 sale, with all proceeds benefiting the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) non-profit organization.

The car was then generously donated back to the PVA by its purchaser and sold again an hour later for an additional $205,000, which also went directly to benefit the non-profit for a total of $535,000.

Other auction highlights included the emotional sale of a one-owner 1992 Ferrari 512 TR , one of just 378 produced for the U.S. market. The original owner lifted the reserve at $220,000, and a bidding war ensued, climbing in $5,000 increments to a final hammer price of $295,000. Leading all muscle cars, a Candyapple Red 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback brought a $250,000 high bid. The ‘50s era was well-represented by an Amos Minter-restored factory-supercharged 1957 Ford Thunderbird F-Bird (pictured above), which demanded $225,000, and a 1969 Dodge Daytona equipped with a 440 Magnum engine and four-speed transmission rounded out the top five sales gaveling for $205,000.

“This year’s lineup was very diverse with great examples from nearly every category of collectability,” notes Mecum consignment director Frank Mecum. “Whether you were after a Ford or a Ferrari, the Dallas roster was jam-packed.”
