New Chevrolet Cobalt revealed, but not in North America

(November 7, 2011) So you thought the Chevrolet Cobalt died with the 2010 model year, replaced with the hot-selling Cruze sedan.

Wrong. The Chevrolet Cobalt is alive and presumably well, just not in North America. The name lives on as an all-new sub-compact sedan that will soon go on sale in 40 countries around the world next year.

The first images of the new Cobalt have been released. The car was first revealed as a concept at the 2011 Buenos Aires Auto Show in June.

The brand new 2012 Cobalt will go on sale in 40 countries and markets across the world, from Africa and South America to the Middle East and even Europe. However, it probably won’t be made available in he U.S., since it overlaps with the Sonic.

In Brazil, where it was designed, the Cobalt will get two engine options, a 1.4-liter with 102 horsepower and a bigger 1.8-liter that has yet to be fully revealed.

GM said the Cobalt is a global product and will be offered with a choice of four cylinder engines ranging in displacement from 1.3 to 1.8 liters running on ethanol, gas or diesel, with automatic and manual transmissions available.

Pricing for the 2012 Cobalt will start at $23,000 in the Brazil while there are no details about the figures for the other markets. However, the European customers will benefit from a wider engine range to choose from.
