Morgan and Orlebar Brown create holiday-ready Super 3

(November 26, 2022) Morgan Motor Company has teamed up with resort wear and swimwear brand, Orlebar Brown, to create the ultimate holiday ready Super 3. While all Morgan sports cars can be tailored to the individual tastes of their owner, this one-off Super 3 showcases a range of bespoke design features.

Morgan unveiled the 3-wheel Super 3 in February, and the first production cars are now in showrooms around the world. The Morgan Super 3 is powered by a naturally aspirated version of Ford's light and compact 1.5-liter, three-cylinder "Dragon" engine, used in turbocharged form in the Ford Bronco Sport, as well as the European-spec Ford Focus and Fiesta hatchbacks.

The decision to switch to a car engine was driven by the fact that the previous car's S&S V-twin would struggle to meet future emission standards, and other similar motorcycle engines all had integrated sequential-shift transmissions. Still, there's history here: The F-Series Morgan Three-Wheeler built between 1933 and 1952 was powered by Ford side-valve engines.

In the Super 3 the Ford Dragon engine, which drives the single rear wheel through a Mazda MX-5 sourced five-speed manual transmission connected to a bevel box and carbon-fiber reinforced drive belt, makes 118 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 110 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. That doesn't sound like much. But as the Super 3 weighs not much more than 1,400 pounds, Morgan says that's enough grunt to shoot it to 60 mph in less than 7.0 seconds on to a top speed of 130 mph. And with no roof, no doors, optional aero screens, and the road rushing past just under your elbows, that's feel very fast.

The company’s history of creating bespoke special projects has lent itself perfectly to the collaboration with Orlebar Brown. Designers from both companies have worked together to create the unique specification.

The OB x Morgan Super 3 is finished in a pastel beige paint color, combined with matching Khaki Sand technical fabric interior. Orlebar Brown’s unique red colorway features prominently throughout the vehicle. Several bespoke adaptations to the interior continue this theme, including a body color instrument cluster, red cockpit bungee cords and a body color OB liveried gearshift surround.

The exterior of the Super 3 features custom laser cut, geometric pattern side-blade luggage racks, with red bungee cords, a graphic applied to the side-blade mirrors the luggage rack pattern onto the bodywork.

Most strikingly, the OB x Morgan Super 3 has been adapted by the Morgan special projects team to enable the attachment of a bespoke sunshade canopy, allowing driver and passenger to seek shade from the sun. The removable canopy, with its body color frame, is trimmed with the same Khaki Sand technical fabric as the interior of the car and fits to specially adapted mounts on the flyscreens and roll hoops.

The ultimate holiday ready Super 3 will be seen in some of Europe’s most exotic locations over the next 12 months.

To launch the collaboration, adventure photographer and visual artist Karl Shakur has taken the OB x Morgan Super 3 on its first road trip, capturing his adventures on and off the roads and beaches in locations around Wales.

The standard Super 3 starts around $70,000 and is on sale in the U.S.
