Mercedes-Benz Sprinter on the big screen in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Sprinter takes a role in Sony 's

upcoming film to save the world

(March 16, 2024) ATLANTA — An upfitted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, joins the Spengler family as they team up with the original Ghostbusters to save the world in the upcoming film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Returning to where it all started — the iconic New York firehouse — the original Ghostbusters developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level.

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. Complementing the Ghostbuster crew is the new team member: a one-of-a-kind engineering Sprinter called ECTO-Z.

ECTO-Z features a special pull-out rack that carries equipment, such as Proton Packs, Ghost Traps and Muon Scrubbers, to gear up all Ghostbuster members. The versatile Sprinter offers supernatural storage and flexible space ideal for the monstrous upfit inside the back of the vehicle. Prepared for the most critical weather conditions — seat heating included — and geared with advanced assist systems, it ensures confidence on icy roads and flexibility for anghost hunting job, regardless of the prevailing condition. The ECTO-Z is the only official engineered Ghostbuster vehicle next to the beloved 1984 ECTO-1.

"The Sprinter is the perfect companion to the iconic Ecto-1 for our new Ghostbusters engineering team. How else are they gonna lug a bunch of proton packs around New York City, and do it in style?,"
said Gil Kenan, director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

"When things are starting to get tough, the Sprinter first responder vehicles will help save the day. Like the ECTO-Z, these vehicles are built to get the most-demanding jobs done. This was the initial thought behind our van choice for the movie. The real potential was shown after we completed the upfitting process and realized just how endless the possibilities are inside the van," said Dennis McCarthy, vehicle effects.

Ahead of the premiere, Ghostbusters took over the Hook & Ladder Company 8 building to bring the Frozen Empire to NYC’s iconic firehouse. Icy embellishments and branding were added to the exterior of the firehouse to resemble the frozen look from the movie. The ECTO-1 and the new ECTO-Z were on display at the firehouse for fans to take photos and interact with the vehicles.

The film is scheduled to be released in U.S. theatres on March 22.
