Ford recalls nearly 2 million Explorer crossovers over loose trim

(January 25, 2024) WASHINGTON — Ford is recalling nearly 2 million Explorer crossovers in the U.S. because exterior trim near the windshield could detach while driving, creating a hazard for other road users and increasing the risk of a crash, according to Automotive News. The recall covers Ford Explorers from the 2011-19 model years. Globally, about 2.24 million vehicles are being recalled, Ford said.

"Some of the exterior A-pillar appliqué trim clip attachments are not properly engaged due to improper assembly or repair. If this occurs, the A-pillar appliqué trim, which borders the right and left side of the windshield, may be loose, missing or become detached," Ford said in a recall report submitted Jan. 19 to NHTSA.

Customers with an affected vehicle might notice gaps around the loose trim or hear a rattle or "excessive wind noise" from the A-pillar area, according to the report.

As of Jan. 12, Ford told NHTSA it was aware of more than 14,300 warranty claims alleging missing or detached exterior A-pillar trim parts. The automaker said it was not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
