Ford generated most U.S. recalls for third straight year

But Ford's 2023 total is down
21 percent from the 2022 recalls

(December 22, 2023) WASHINGTON — For the third year in a row Ford had the most recalls of any U.S. automaker, partial NHTSA data shows. Automotive News reported that through Dec. 18, Ford issued 54 recalls affecting nearly 5.7 million vehicles in the U.S. this year. However, that's down about 21 percent from the number of recalls it issued in 2022, when the automaker reported 68 recalls affecting more than 8.7 million vehicles.

In 2021, Ford issued 53 recalls affecting nearly 5.4 million vehicles. General Motors led with the highest volume of vehicles and equipment recalled, totaling nearly 8 million for that year, according to the data.

Of the U.S. recalls Ford issued this year through Dec. 18, the largest involved a callback of nearly 1.3 million older model Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for rupturing front brake hoses. The smallest recall — issued in August — covered just two 2023 Bronco midsize SUVs over an issue with the transmission that could cause those vehicles to roll away.

The 2023 U.S. data comes as the automaker continues to chip away at improving quality issues. Compared with 2022, about 30 percent fewer Ford customers were affected by safety-related recalls this year, said spokesperson Maria Buczkowski.
