(December 9, 2015) Five of the six finalists announced Tuesday for the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are made by foreign-owned automakers. The only domestic nameplate among the six is the Chevrolet Malibu. The annual awards will be announced on Jan. 11 at the Detroit auto show.

Finalists for 2016 Car of the Year are — Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Civic and Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Finalists for Truck of the Year are — Honda Pilot, Nissan Titan XD and Volvo XC90.

Now in its 23rd year, the awards recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year as judged by an independent jury of 53 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada. There were 49 eligible vehicles.

Last year's winners were the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford F-150.
