Edmunds opens pricing and vehicle spec data to Web developer community

(September 15, 2011) SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Edmunds.com today made available its full database of new car and used car specifications and pricing to the online applications community. The much-anticipated release of Edmunds.com's application programming interface (API) is the first ever by a major automotive website and will allow developers full access for designing and enhancing their own online car shopping applications.

"This is essentially the same API used by our own product development team to access vehicle data for the Edmunds.com website as well as our mobile sites and apps, and we are excited to see what can be created by the larger developer community," said Philip Potloff, Chief Information Officer at Edmunds.com.

"In preparing for this launch our developers built several experimental mashups of data from the Edmunds.com API and other third-party APIs, and it proved that there are a lot of compelling experiences that can be created to improve the automotive consumer experience."

In the initial release, Edmunds.com will make available pricing and vehicle specifications for 36,500 different trim levels of over 6,000 car models from 1990 through the current model year. Edmunds is working with Mashery.com, a leading provider of API management solutions, to help facilitate access to Edmunds.com data.

"Developers interested in learning more can checkout a sample pricing widget and API directory on our developer portal," noted Ismail Elshareef, Director of Open Platform Initiatives at Edmunds.com.
