A Corvette crossover? It's possible, report says

(December 5, 2022) General Motors reportedly will introduce a Corvette sub-brand starting in 2025, with plans for an electric four-door coupe and crossover, according to a report in Automotive News. Car and Driver magazine, citing a source within GM, last week said the vehicles will expand Chevrolet's high-performance model into a family of vehicles.

A source called the initial vehicle proposals "copies of nothing," according to Car and Driver, and added that "Corvette is not just a brand. It's a constantly evolving system paired with a dramatically different user experience."

A plan to leverage the Corvette badge, one of GM's most revered nameplates but one that generates low volumes, would allow the company to target additional profitable but growing segments. A Chevrolet spokesperson declined to comment on the report, saying the brand has "nothing to confirm regarding future Corvette plans."

Forecasters expect Chevy to release an electric version of the sports car in 2025, while at least one Corvette crossover could appear around that same year, Automotive News reported this year. They would be built at GM's Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan.

Chevy's plans include a freshening of the gasoline-powered mid-engine Corvette in 2025 and a hybrid version expected to launch late next year, Automotive News has reported.

Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, called an expanded Corvette lineup "a small family of sporty or luxury EVs" that follows — and may build on — a similar effort by Ford Motor Co. to extend the Mustang brand to the Mach-E electric crossover.

"With the need to put an aura around electric vehicles, it makes sense to spin Corvette off as a standalone EV brand," Fiorani said, adding that his forecasts include expanded Corvette models in the second half of the decade.
