Consumer Reports lifts its 'don't buy' label from Lexus GX 460

(May 7, 2010) Consumer Reports has lifted its “don’t buy” label from the 2010 Lexus GX 460 SUV.

The magazine said in a statement Thursday that the handling issue it identified during testing was corrected after Lexus developed software for the SUV’s electronic stability control system. GX 460 owners have been asked to bring their vehicles in for repairs.

Lexus parent Toyota Motor Corp. suspended sales and production of the SUV and began its own investigation almost a month ago, after Consumer Reports called the model a “safety risk” because of the way it slid out of control on certain turns.

Toyota, which said in late April it would resume sales of the Lexus SUV, recalled the 9,400 GX 460 models already sold.

To fix the problem,Toyota said it would install newly designed software to update the GX 460's ESC, which will apply more hydraulic pressure when a slide or skid is detected. Toyota also implemented changes on the production line to correct the SUV's handling issue, the company said.
