Consumer Reports cites defect in 2023 Honda HR-V

Magazine finds numerous owners
have reported shattered rear windows

(January 30, 2024) Owners of the 2023 Honda HR-V are reporting their rear windows shattering suddenly, an issue Consumer Reports said warrants a recall. Honda has said a manufacturing defect where the sealer securing the rear glass on some 2023 HR-V vehicles meets the heating of the defroster weakens the glass from the heat.

As a result of improper installation and contact of the glass with the heating elements, windows are shattering. Honda advises owners to continue using the vehicle and is replacing shattered windows for free.

The rear windshield shattered on a Consumer Reports 2023 Honda HR-V test vehicle earlier this month after being started remotely on a chilly morning, prompting the investigation into hundreds of consumer complaints.

As of Jan. 26, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website recorded more than 300 complaints about shattered rear glass. Most comments on the page described a loud sound as their rear window shattered unexpectedly.

No recall has been issued so far for the problem. NHTSA has released a statement regarding the safety concern.
