(November 4, 2011) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Chrysler is recalling approximately 5,334 right-hand-drive Jeep Wrangler vehicles to replace the airbag clockspring assembly that could turn on the airbag lamp, which indicates the airbag may not deploy in the event of a crash.

The voluntary safety recall is limited to right-hand-drive 2008-2012 Jeep Wrangler vehicles sold in the U.S.
 
“The vast majority of these right-hand-drive vehicles are used primarily for rural postal routes,” said David Dillon, Head of Product Investigations and Campaigns for Chrysler Group. “Following field investigations by our engineers, it was determined that the condition is being caused by the dirt, dust, rain, etc., that the interior is exposed to when letter carriers lower their windows frequently.”

Chrysler reports that there have been no accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Chrysler will send letters to customers in November informing them of the potential condition, that a permanent remedy is not yet available and that in the interim, if they experience an airbag illumination, they should bring their vehicle to a Chrysler-authorized dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the clockspring as required.
