Baltimore bridge collapse to impact auto industry

(March 27, 2024) The collapse of a bridge in Blatimore harbor when it was hit by a container ship Tuesday will disrupt the shipment of automobiles and parts after traffic was suspended at the Port of Baltimore until further notice. The Baltimore port's private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port.

The port handles imports, exports and parts shipments for major automakers such as Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover and the Volkswagen Group — including luxury models for Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.

“It’s too early to say what impact this incident will have on the auto business, but there will certainly be a disruption,” said John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation in a statement. “Baltimore is the No. 1 automobile port in the U.S., and we’re in touch with federal officials to help them understand the scale of automotive operations there.”
