Average fuel economy for new cars stays flat for third straight month
(November 9, 2012) SANTA MONICA, Calif. — TrueCar.com has provided actual fuel economy numbers from September light vehicle auto sales that indicate TrueMPG increased to 23.2 mpg in October 2012 compared to 22.2 mpg in October 2011, and stayed flat from September 2012 at 23.2 mpg.
"Unseasonably strong demand for small and gas efficient vehicles balanced what would have otherwise been a drop in overall MPG due to large trucks showing some strength in the marketplace," said Jesse Toprak, senior analyst at TrueCar.com. "We anticipate a relative decline in TrueMPG for the rest of the year, as the larger SUVs and trucks claim a large market share with the weather conditions worsening and end of the year deals creating attractive discounts for these segments."

According to TrueCar.com, the TrueMPG for vehicles sold by U.S. manufacturers averaged 21.1 MPG in October 2012, up from 20.4 MPG in October 2011. European manufacturers increased their average fuel economy for vehicles sold from 21.9 MPG to 23.5 MPG; Japanese manufacturers increased their average fuel economy from last year at 23.6 MPG to 25.0 MPG; and South Korean manufacturers increased their average fuel economy for vehicles from 26.8 MPG to 27.1 MPG.
