1930 Stutz wins Milwaukee Masterpiece best in show

(August 31, 2011) A 1930 Stutz Model M took the Best in Show trophy at the Milwaukee Masterpiece this past weekend.

Part of a class celebrating the centennial of the Stutz marque at the Masterpiece, the 1930 Stutz Model M was one of two Stutzes entered by Alexander Kennedy Mitchell of Montgomery, Texas, and arrived in Milwaukee directly from the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The Stutz has a supercharged 322 cubic inch straight eight making 140 horsepower. It is described as one of two factory supercharged Stutzes still in existence and the only copy with coachwork by Lancefield of London. The Lancefield body includes a retractable roof and teardrop step plates.

After a total restoration in the mid-1990s, it ran the 1997 Beijing-Paris Motor Challenge, and was treated to another restoration after Mitchell bought it in August 2010. The Stutz previously won Best in Class at this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and second in class at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Described as a car lover’s dream and the best event in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Masterpiece annually puts together a collection of award-winning, unique automobiles and motorcycles. Automobiles on display have included Duesenberg, Bentley, Mason, Gale and Ferrari. Motorcycles include Indian, Harley-Davidson, Triumph and Brough Superior.
