Audi selects California raceway for U.S. self-driving vehicle research

(January 6, 2016) HERNDON, Virginia — Audi has selected Thunderhill Raceway Park in northern California as a key U.S. test center for advanced piloted driving research. Under the multi-year partnership, engineers from Audi and the Electronics Research Lab in Belmont, Calif., will use the track to study how self-driving vehicles perform at the limits of speed.

In this way, the engineers will understand how to calibrate the vehicle software and advanced driver assistance systems to handle sudden and extreme conditions.

Kia's unnamed concept hints at return to large SUV market

(January 6, 2016) Kia Motors America will reveal a new concept car Jan. 11 at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit hinting at a return to the large SUV market. Kia hasn't marketed a large sport utility in the U.S. since the seven-passenger Borrego was dropped in 2011. 

Conceived at the automaker’s California design studio, Kia says the concept offers an abundance of advanced technology — including state-of-the-art health-and-wellness technology – and takes Kia’s design language in a bold new direction.

F-150 best-selling truck for 34th straight year leading Ford sales

(January 5, 2015) DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford’s total 2015 U.S. sales of 2,613,162 vehicles are the company’s best annual sales results in nine years — up 5 percent. Ford brand sales of 2,511,935 vehicles make Ford America’s best-selling brand for six straight years.

U.S. December sales total 239,242 vehicles, up 8 percent versus a year ago. An 8 percent retail sales increase drove overall performance, with 174,509 vehicles sold last month. 

Fiat Chrysler reports best December sales in 90-year history

(January 5, 2016) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles today reported U.S. sales of 217,527 units, a 13 percent increase compared with sales in December 2014, and the group’s best December sales ever.
 
The Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck and FIAT brands each posted year-over-year sales gains in December compared with the same month a year ago. The Jeep brand’s 42 percent increase was the largest sales gain of any FCA US brand during the month. The group extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 69 consecutive months.

Volkswagen potentially faces more than $18 billion in fines for violations

(January 5, 2016) WASHINGTON — The U.S. Justice Department has filed a civil suit against Volkswagen AG for allegedly violating the Clean Air Act by installing illegal devices to impair emission control systems in 600,000 vehicles.

"The United States will pursue all appropriate remedies against Volkswagen to redress the violations of our nation's clean air laws," said Assistant Attorney General John Cruden, head of the departments environment and natural resources division.

GM CEO Bara elected chairman of the board of directors

(January 5, 2016) DETROIT — The General Motors board of directors has announced the unanimous selection of Mary Barra as its next chairman, effective immediately. She succeeds Theodore (Tim) Solso, who will continue serving as the board’s lead independent director. Barra has served as GM CEO since Jan. 15, 2014.

“At a time of unprecedented industry change, the board concluded it is in the best interests of the company to combine the roles of Chair and CEO in order to drive
the most efficient execution of our plan and vision for the future,” said Solso.

Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle will debut at CES in Las Vegas

Toyota accelerates its connected car technology initiatives

Volvo, Ericsson developing intelligent media streaming for self-driving cars
