Chrysler to begin production of Fiat 500 in Mexico in December

(February 9, 2010) Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said Chrysler will invest $550 million in Mexico to begin production of the compact Fiat 500 model car.

The investment will retool a production site developed by Chrysler, which emerged from bankruptcy in June under the management control of Fiat. The investment will allow the plant outside Mexico City to begin production by December, said Marchionne, who also heads Fiat.

The 500 will be sold as Fiat models from Chrysler dealerships in the United States.

GM says repair parts for Pontiac Vibe accelerator pedal are arriving

(February 8, 2010) GM is finally telling Pontiac Vibe owners to bring their vehicles into dealerships for fixes. The Vibe was built along side the Toyota Matrix at the NUMMNI plant in Fremont, Calif., and shares the same accelerator hardware as the Toyota.

Toyota preparing worldwide recall of hybrid Prius

(February 8, 2010) Toyota  is preparing a recall of its new Prius hybrid car in Japan as early as Tuesday, followed by similar steps in the United States, Europe and other markets, a source familiar with its plans said, Automotive News reported today.

Toyota, which has earned a reputation as the green-vehicle front-runner with the fuel-sipping Prius, has said it is discussing with safety authorities worldwide how to fix a software glitch that delays braking on the model in certain road conditions.

GM says its new lineup of heavy-duty diesel pickups will have biodiesel capability

(February 8, 2010) GM announced today that its new lineup of heavy-duty diesel pickups will have B20 biodiesel capability. B20 fuel is a blend of 20-percent biodiesel and 80-percent conventional diesel, which helps lower carbon dioxide emissions and lessens dependence on petroleum. The announcement was made at the National Biodiesel Conference.

Suzuki, Mazda raise annual profit forecasts

(February 7, 2010) Suzuki Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp., Japan's fourth- and fifth-biggest car makers, hiked their annual profit forecasts Friday as they enjoyed higher demand in some markets and cut costs.

Suzuki and Mazda, like other automakers globally, have been slashing fixed costs and boosting production efficiencies to cope with the global economic slowdown, while getting a boost from government incentives on purchases of fuel-efficient cars.

Ford begins building new Figo at expanded facility in India

(February 6, 2010) CHENNAI, India — Less than six months after Ford CEO Alan Mulally revealed the new Figo to India. The first production model was driven off the assembly line Friday.

Production begins following a $500 million investment by Ford. New-car production capacity is up to 200,000 units annually doubling production at the facility. The Chennai facility will produce up to 10 different engines for both domestic and export sale including diesel and gas engines.

Toyota president pledges improvement in quality, apologizes to customers

(February 6, 2010) Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, today expressed his regret for the inconvenience and concern caused to Toyota customers. He also announced that he personally will take the lead toward improving quality around the world by establishing a global quality task force that will conduct quality improvement activities region by region.
 
The committee headed by Mr. Toyoda will have a six point action plan:
 
1) Improve Quality Inspection Process — Toyota will once again inspect every process, while verifying the causes that led to the recalls, including quality in design, production, sales and service.
 

Government opening investigation into Prius brake problems

(February 6, 2010) The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today that it is opening a formal investigation of the 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid to determine whether the vehicle suffers momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over bumpy surfaces.

Toyota acknowledged design problems Thursday with the brakes in its best-selling Prius, adding to the woes for the Japanese automaker as it reels from massive gas-pedal recalls in the U.S.

2011 Ford Edge will gain Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4

(February 6, 2010) Ford's EcoBoost technology relies on direct injection, turbocharging and other technical wizardry to deliver improved performance and lower emissions. The refreshed mid-sized Ford Edge crossover will be one of the first vehicles in the Ford lineup to offer the EcoBoost 4 to customers. It will be shown at the Chicago Auto Show later this month.The EcoBoost V-6 can be found in several 2010 Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
