Cummins reaches two-million milestone building Ram engines

(December 11, 2012) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Cummins Inc. has produced its 2-millionth diesel engine for Ram Trucks, highlighting the latest milestone in a storied partnership that spans four decades. The 350-horsepower, 6.7-liter, in-line 6-cylinder turbo diesel is distinguished by its “Cummins Red” rocker cover and breather. But despite its 800 pound-feet peak torque rating, the historic engine — feted Monday at a Cummins plant in Columbus, Ind. — will not see service. Instead, it will go on display, touring the U.S.

Highway deaths fall to lowest level in more than six decades

(December 10, 2012) WASHINGTON — The government today released a new analysis indicating that highway deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, marking the lowest level since 1949 and a 1.9 percent decrease from the previous year. The updated 2011 data announced today by the National Traffic Safety Administration show the historic downward trend in recent years continued through last year and represent a 26 percent decline in traffic fatalities overall since 2005.

Gilmore Car Museum is featuring dust bowl display

(December 10, 2012) HICKORY CORNERS, Mich. — The Gilmore Car Museum is now offering an exhibition that looks at autos in the Dust Bowl era. The display at the Gilmore Car Museum coincides with the recent airing of PBS' two-part television series, "The Dust Bowl."

The film by Ken Burns features interviews with residents who lived through the Great Depression, drought and wind storms in the 1930s.

Opel plans to end car production in Bochum, Germany, in 2016

(December 10, 2012) RUESSELSHEIM — Adam Opel AG management today informed its employees that vehicle production is planned to end in Bochum at the end of the current Zafira lifecycle — expected  in 2016.

In June, Opel announced that no successor to the current Zafira is planned to be allocated in Bochum in view of the shrinking European car market and the overcapacities in the automotive industry. Despite intensive efforts this situation could not be changed, Opel said.

Advanced 3.2-liter turbo diesel to power 2014 Ford Transit

BMW Group sales climb 23 percent in November

(November 10, 2012) The BMW Group experienced growth on all continents in November and achieved another record month in sales. With 170,932 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles delivered worldwide, sales were 23% higher than in the same month last year  when 138,954 were sold.

Thousands of cars damaged by Sandy to be crushed

(December 10, 2012) DES PLAINES, Ill. — The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says progress is being made in identifying and removing thousands of vehicles damaged beyond repair by Sandy. The estimate of 230,000 insurance claims for vehicle damage in the areas affected by Sandy remains unchanged.

Many of those vehicles were flooded and are being towed to holding areas where they will be loaded on car haulers and taken to facilities to be crushed.

Chevy, Michigan Tech reveal cycle for wounded veterans

(December 9, 2012) WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chevrolet and students from Michigan Technological University have revealed a new hand cycle designed to make it easier for wounded veterans to compete in racing events, including marathons. In addition, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson announced GM will build 10 prototypes for use next year by the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans in marathons across the country.

Kia forms marketing partnership with College Football Hall of Fame
