Volkswagen car sales continue to grow worldwide

(September 10, 2011) WOLFSBURG — The sale of Volkswagen cars reached more than 3.34 million worldwide from January through August, a 12.1 percent increase over 2010, Volkswagen reported on Friday.

For August, the brand delivered 389,500 cars, a 9.5 percent gain over August 2010.

“The Volkswagen passenger cars brand continues to make good progress. We delivered well over three million vehicles in the period to August for the first time. We are nevertheless keeping a very close eye on developments on the world’s automotive markets,” Christian Klingler, board member for sales and marketing for the Volkswagen Group said Friday.

In North America Volkswagen delivered 320,700 vehicles to customers through the first eight months of the year representing a 21.6 percent increase over last year. The Jetta was particularly successful.

The single biggest market for Volkswagen continues to be China, with 1.13 million units sold so far in 2011, representing an 11.3 percent increase over the same time period in 2010.
