Nissan issues recall over battery problem

(December 20, 2011) Nissan is conducting a voluntary safety recall campaign on approximately 51,700 model year 2010-2011Sentra vehicles in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan to replace the positive battery terminal.

It's also recalling some 2011 Juke small crossovers because a bracket could break and cause the engine to stall.

It was recently determined that an improper bolt coating on the battery terminal may cause a voltage drop that could damage the Electronic Control Module (ECM). In rare instances, this issue could cause the engine to stop running while the vehicle is in motion.

This marks the second time in a month Nissan has recalled the cars for a battery issue.

The previous battery recall involved Sentras built May 22-July 8, 2010. An improperly machined battery terminal could leave a gap between the
terminal and battery cable, resulting in the same situation as the latest recall — engine stalling and hard or impossible restarting, NHTSA says.

The latest recall was reported to NHTSA on Dec. 14 and made public over the weekend. The previous recall was reported to NHTSA on Nov. 11.

The Juke recall, which Nissan reported to NHTSA on Dec. 8, involves 2011 models built April 9 -May 12, 2011. A turbocharger boost sensor bracket can come loose and cause the engine to stall while idling. NHTSA says that increases the risk of a crash.
