Mitsubishi announces it will sell Mirage in U.S.

(March 29, 2013) NEW YORK — Mitsubishi Motors North America has unveiled its fuel-efficient all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door subcompact at the 2013 New York International Auto Show that is expected to arrive at U.S. dealers later this fall.

The all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage model is expected to achieve a manufacturer estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg combined/37 mpg city/44 mpg highway (CVT-equipped model) pending EPA fuel mileage rating, making it the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline vehicle available in America.

In addition to its exceptional fuel economy, the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will be offered exclusively in a convenient 5-door configuration with room for five passengers.

The five-door hatchback will be powered by 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 74 horsepower and 74 pounds-feet of torque.

The Mirage will compete against small cars such as the Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi says. Masatoshi Hasegawa, executive vice president of corporate planning at Mitsubishi Motors North America, said monthly Mirage sales should total about 500-600 units in the United States.

Pricing was not announced. Yoichi Yokozawa, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, said the Mirage's base price would be similar to the Chevrolet Spark, which starts at $12,995 including shipping.

It was announced earlier this month that the tiny Mirage will start at £8,999 ($13,500) in the UK.

The Mirage may give a boost to the shrinking Mitsubishi lineup in the U.S. that has been cut to just a few models led by the Outlander crossover vehicle.
