Hyundai recalls 13,500 Velosters for sunroof problem

(December 19, 2012) DETROIT — Hyundai is recalling about 13,500 Velosters with sunroofs that may shatter while the car is moving, the company and U.S. safety regulators said. The optional "panoramic" sunroofs may have been weakened during the car's assembly process, which could cause the glass panel to break, Hyundai said in a filing submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall follows a safety probe launched by U.S. regulators in October. NHTSA said it has received 11 consumer complaints saying that sunroofs have shattered or exploded in their 2012 Veloster models.

In seven of the complaints, sunroofs shattered while the owner was behind the wheel, typically at highway speeds, NHTSA said. Some consumers who complained reported sustaining minor scratches from falling shards of glass.

The Veloster, a sporty coupe, is built in South Korea and the recall affects Velosters equipped with the sunroofs made from Nov. 1, 2011, through April 17, 2012. Hyundai has sold 32,886 Velosters in the U.S. through November.

Hyundai will notify customers who will be advised to bring their cars into dealerships for inspection and, if necessary, free replacement of the sunroofs.
