GM releases video of testing the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado

(July 13, 2012) DETROIT — GM engineers are putting the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado through the final paces at the company’s proving grounds in Yuma, Ariz. The water test pictured above is part of a rigorous product validation program.

General Motors has released a short video of testing a camouflaged prototype of the new Silverado pulling a load up a steep incline.

Production of the truck will start in 2013.

Engines and the transmissions are likely to all be new. GM has announced a new fifth-generation small-block V-8 with direct injection, aluminum blocks and a unique combustion chamber design. There is speculation the automaker could also make broader use of V-6 engines. GM is sure to drop the ancient 4.3-liter V-6 in favor of the more powerful, yet more efficient six-cylinder engines including the 3.6 that it is now used in everything from the Chevrolet Traverse to the Cadillac CTS.

The long-used four-speed transmission will likely be gone from the Silverado lineup, replaced by more efficient six-speeds.
