GM, Ford recall more than one million vehicles

(May 19, 2023) General Motors and Ford have recalled more than one million vehicles this week for separate issues.  General Motors is recalling more than 668,000 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles in the U.S. for child seat anchors that may not function properly. Ford is recalling more than 422,000 2020-23 Explorer, 2020-23 Lincoln Aviator and 2020-22 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera that might not display properly.

The GM recall affects Equinox and Terrain compact crossovers from the 2020-23 model years. Those vehicles fail to comply with requirements under a federal safety standard for child restraint anchorage systems, according to NHTSA. GM said it was not aware of any injuries, accidents or deaths related to the issue.

The child seat LATCH system — which stands for lower anchors and tethers for children — anchorage bars might have excessive powder coating and could prevent a child seat from being installed. The inability to install a child seat with the anchorage bars could result in an unsecured child seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect the anchorage bars and remove and replace the finish as necessary. GM is advising vehicle owners to install child seats using the rear seat belts until the repair is complete.

The Ford recall expands and replaces a recall for the same defect issued in January. Cameras might intermittently display either a rear camera blue image or a full blue or black image on screen when the vehicle is placed in reverse or when the 360-degree view is selected and available. Ford estimated that 100 percent of the vehicles recalled are affected.

The loss of camera images while in reverse can increase the risk of a crash. As of April 26, 2023, Ford is unaware of any injuries related to this concern. There is 1 allegation of a minor crash related to a loss of rear-view camera image. The January recall attributed the defect to camera components produced by Valeo.

Ford will notify owners beginning June 26. Ford is still working to determine the cause of the defect and an appropriate remedy.
