General Motors sets September sales record in China

(October 15, 2013) SHANGHAI — In September, General Motors and its joint ventures sold 277,647 vehicles in China, a record for the month. Sales increased 13.7 percent from September 2012.

GM’s Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling manufacturing joint ventures as well as all of their brands had all-time record September domestic sales. Shanghai GM’s sales were up 10.6 percent year on year to 132,783 units and SAIC-GM-Wuling’s sales increased 16.9 percent to 139,676 units. FAW-GM’s sales were also up, rising 3.3 percent to 4,733 units.


Buick’s September sales in China increased 14.3 percent on an annual basis to 71,002 units. Sales of the original Excelle family rose 15.9 percent to 26,875 units and sales of the Excelle XT and GT rose 28.3 percent to 19,645 units. Demand for the LaCrosse was up 12.5 percent to 9,797 units.

Chevrolet sales in China came in at 57,285 units in September, an increase of 2.0 percent year on year. The brand was led by the Cruze, which benefited from the introduction of a hatchback model. The nameplate generated sales of 24,744 units, an increase of 34.9 percent from last September. It was followed by the Sail, which had sales of 16,533 units, and the Malibu, which had sales of 8,814 units.

Cadillac sales jumped 73.9 percent to 4,496 units. Its best-selling models were the SRX and XTS, which had sales of 2,636 units and 1,849 units respectively.

Wuling sales totaled 129,648 units, an increase of 18.4 percent year on year, as sales of the Hong Guang and new Hong Guang S jumped 80.8 percent to 51,210 units. Baojun sales during the month were up 9.6 percent to 10,028 units.

During the first nine months of 2013 as a whole, sales by GM and its joint ventures in China increased 11.1 percent on an annual basis to a record 2,312,418 units. Sales by Shanghai GM were up 14.9 percent year on year to 1,111,129 units, sales by SAIC-GM-Wuling were up 8.1 percent to 1,156,778 units and sales by FAW-GM were down 0.5 percent to 41,063 units. In addition, Buick sales rose 17.6 percent year on year to 606,330 units, Chevrolet sales were up 3.7 percent to 472,561 units, Cadillac sales increased 51.2 percent to 32,238 units, Wuling sales were up 9.8 percent to 1,087,591 units and Baojun sales grew 27.8 percent to 69,187 units.
