Fun with bat houses and wood duck nesting boxes

(May 16, 2012) DETROIT — There’s nothing inherently funny about converting scrap Chevrolet Volt battery covers into wildlife habitats such as wood duck nesting boxes to bat houses,  but it makes pretty good cartoon fare just the same.

Instead of sending that material to a landfill, GM reuses it to benefit wildlife, creating more than 150 of them so far at designated wildlife habitat areas surrounding its facilities, as well as other U.S. locations where GM environmental engineers work alongside students and community groups to convert them.

That prompted Birgit Keil, a green and cause-minded cartoonist and blogger, to draw her impressions of the project.  Her blog contains more information about GM’s effort and why swapping out insect killer for a bat house might be a smart, nature-friendly choice.
