FCA recalling more than 600,000 vehicles in two recalls

(May 20, 2019) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling more than 600,000 vehicles in two separate recalls. An estimated 198,731 Chrysler Pacifica minivans are being recalled to inspect and clean, as needed, an electrical contact to help ensure reliable battery operation. In the second recall, FCA is recalling an estimated 410,351 U.S.-market pickup trucks to upgrade their tailgate locking mechanisms.

In the first recall, an FCA US investigation discovered a wiring harness in the minivans may be contaminated with sealer, which may interrupt an electrical circuit. Should this occur, the vehicle may exhibit stalling or intermittent loss of power steering.

The company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. Should an affected vehicle stall, it may be immediately restarted, while steering capability would remain despite power-steering loss.

In the second recall, FCA US has discovered the power locking mechanisms in the tailgates of some pickups share a small internal component that may break over time. If this were to happen, a vehicle’s tailgate may unlatch.

FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. The campaign is limited to 2015-2017 model-year Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups equipped with eight-foot cargo beds, and 2018 versions of the same trucks produced through March 31, 2018.

The redesigned-for-2019 Ram 1500 is not affected. Its tailgate mechanism features a new design that delivers enhanced functionality, such as lift-assist. Trucks equipped with manual tailgate locks also are excluded.

Notices are expected to be mailed this month. In the interim, FCA US reminds that all loose cargo should be secured while driving, as stated in the operating manuals of the affected vehicles.

Further, FCA US pickups offer alternate features to accommodate load security, such as tie-down rings, cleats, high-friction bed-liners, bulkhead dividers, and bed-extenders.

FCA US urges all customers to heed recall notices. Those who have questions may call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.
