Chrysler recalls small number of 2012 vehicles over contaminated brake fluid

(November 24, 2011) Chrysler is recalling about 340 Dodge Journey crossover vehicles and Fiat 500 subcompact cars from the 2012 model year. The recall stems from possible contamination of the vehicles’ brake systems with improper fluid, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the car maker said the affected vehicles – a total of 340 – were built from Oct. 24 through Oct. 26. The car maker said some vehicles were assembled with what it suspected to be power steering fluid in their brake systems. The mistake could cause seals in the brake system to degrade and possibly result in brake failure.

Under the recall dealers will replace all of the cars’ brake components that come in contact with hydraulic brake fluid. The service will be free of charge and the recall is expected to begin next month. Owners can contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403.
