(March 5, 2012) GENEVA — The Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera, General Motor's two electric vehicles with extended range capability, were jointly named European Car of the Year (COTY) during an award ceremony at the Geneva Motor Show today.
The Volt is equipped with the ground-breaking Voltec propulsion system, which represents a milestone in vehicle electrification.

Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free for up to 40 miles, powered by a full charge of electricity stored in the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the battery is depleted, a gasoline powered 1.4L generator kicks in to extend the car's range to a total of over 300 miles.

Two large screens provide essential information and help the driver use the Volt's unique propulsion system as efficiently as possible.

The European Car of the Year award was established in 1964 and is presented by a jury of 59 leading automotive journalists from 23 countries in Europe. This year is the first time the prize is presented at the Geneva Motor Show.
