Audi's compact hot hatch won't be offered in U.S.

(November 24, 2010) INGOLSTADT, Germany —  Blazing performance, compact size. Audi has added a new model to its dynamic RS series: the RS 3 Sportback.

In the great tradition of the brand, its engine boasts five cylinders and turbocharging technology. From a displacement of 2.5 liters come 340 horsepowerand 331 pound-feet of torque, with an average fuel consumption of about 26 mpg.

Audi estimates 0 to 60 will be accomplished in about 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically controlled to 155 mph.

Power is transmitted to the road via a seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. 19-inch wheels and fenders made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic underscore the Audi RS 3 Sportback’s position of distinction.

But there's a problem for North American drivers. Audi has no plans to bring this tasty compact treat to the U.S. It will be ready for the European market this spring. If it was sold here, expect to pay around $68,000.
