Audi develops hybrid version of new A6

(July 27, 2011) Audi has confirmed a hybrid version of its all-new A6 sedan will be brought to market in 2012 with the ability to derive as much as 37 mils per gallon in combined city and highway driving while having the necessary horsepower to move from 0 to 60 in 7.3 seconds.

What is not yet known is whether the A6 Hybrid will be sold in the United States. Audi has not released any information on future availability in North America.

The 2012 Audi A6 hybrid combines a 211-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with a 54-horsepower (40-kW) electric motor, for a total system output of 245 horsepower directed to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The hybrid powertrain’s peak torque output of 354 pound-feet is healthy, and it helps move the A6 hybrid to 60 mph in a claimed 7.3 seconds. The A6 can run on battery power — a lithium-ion battery pack mounted beneath the trunk floor — up to 40 mph for nearly two miles without the aid of the gas engine, Audi says.

The A6 hybrid comes equipped with three driver-selectable operating modes: electricity-prioritizing “EV,” normal “D,” and sporty “S.” It should be noted that it’s only in S mode that the A6 hybrid’s full full horsepower and torque are available.

The A6 hybrid is distinguished from normal A6s by unique 17- and 18-inch wheels, plus “hybrid” badging on the decklid, fenders, and door sills.
