2012 VW Eos debuts in L.A. with mid-cycle refreshening

(November 17, 2010) Volkswagen is unveiling its all-new 2012 Eos hardtop convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show, with market introduction in early spring of 2011. It features an updated design with numerous new features.

The 2012 Eos is still the the only hardtop convertible with a built-in sunroof.

The rework includes changes to the front and rear fascias. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission is now standard in the U.S. market. The updated folding hardtop goes on sale in Europe early next year as a 2011 model. The U.S. version goes on sale in late March as a 2012 model.

Among the major exterior changes: The grille adopts the VW corporate three-bar look, with black slats trimmed with a thin strip of chrome. The headlamps are now framed by light-emitting diodes that function as the daytime running lamps.

Clearly structured and horizontally contoured, the freshened appearance of the new Eos, available in new exterior color options, follows the code of the Volkswagen design DNA.

With sporty handling and independent suspension, from behind the Eos stands out through its reworked, two-part LED rear lights with a fiber optic technology system and redesigned rear bumper with diffuser.

VW said the standard trim on the instrument panel and doors is a chrome with a matte finish. Higher trim levels will continue to include wood accents and leather seating surfaces. The 2012 Eos is also equipped with a keyless lock/unlock and start system. The audio system will receive high-definition radio signals.

The sole engine for the U.S. market is a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the six-speed dual-clutch transmission, VW expects the Eos to deliver 22 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway.

Volkswagen's Carefree Maintenance Program will pay for all scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
