(July 28, 2023) The IS is Lexus' compact sports sedan that was first introduced by the brand over two decades ago. The current generation arrived for the 2014 model year and received its second facelift for 2022. Over the years I've tested several iterations of the IS and in general liked it albeit more than a bit small for my 6-6 inch height but I was smitten by its excellent V6 and mellifluous exhaust notes.

Back in 2008 the folks at Lexus corporate media sent along a V8 powered IS-F that was also used in the RC F coupe and current LC 500 $100K sports car and again fell in love with just about everything one could ask for. Later that V8 gave way to turbocharged V6 engines so it was with a jolt of surprise when Lexus again stuffed the naturally aspirated 5.0-Liter V8 back under the hood of the IS last year. The 2023 IS 500 F Sport tested here, unsurprisingly hasn't changed after arriving last year.

With 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque delivered through an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Shifts arrive smoothly and quickly but not as sharp and adroit as we've found in Audi or BMW with their ZF eight-speed trannies. Lexus claims a 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Add the dual-stacked quad exhaust system and the IS sounds the part with peak horsepower arriving at 7,100 rpm. While no way is this IS 500 an IS F nor was it intended to be, this IS will lay the power down quickly begging you to whip it for more speed. Still, when it comes to class competitors it will struggle to keep up with some powered by turbocharged six cylinders.

The F Sport trim not only adds more power to the model, but also comes with more aggressive exterior styling and unique 19-inch wheels and larger rear tires, a cold-air intake system, limited-slip ear differential and sport seats that heat and cool. The nose of the IS 500 had to be modified with a bit longer front fenders and a more blistered hood raised about two inches to accommodate the big V8. But the overall look is muscular, chiseled performance and is a thing of beauty to my eyes.

The 500 F Sport also features a performance tuned suspension with a Torsen limited-slip differential that easily handled the twisty turns on our serpentine run on Arizona's two-lane blacktop Apache Trail. We're certain some of the trigger-fish like handling was helped with the sticky Bridgestone Potenza tires on all four corners. Just behind those matte black 19" wheels are larger 14.0-inch front and 12.7-inch rear rotor brakes with a Yamaha-sourced rear chassis damper.

Inside, the IS 500's interior, identical to its RC sibling, is attractive and well-appointed with ample room up front for legs, hips and head room including standard heated and ventilated seats. Rear seating is tight especially if a taller driver has the seat adjusted to its back limit. The cabin is amazingly quiet at speed and the superb seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive. It will more than work as a daily commuter.

But as with the RC, the IS 500's achilles heel is the vehicle's operational touchpad system mounted on the center console that required drivers to take their eyes off the road to work the essentially computer mouse while watching the screen.

We've complained about this system for years. Finally, Lexus has updated the infotainment system for 2023 with additional functionality. While the previous infotainment display was controlled by the overly complex and the unfriendly touchpad on the center console you no longer need to use the touchpad since there is now a new touch screen that works extremely well with quick responses to taps and swipes making it easy to use for the infotainment system.

The 10.3-inch touchscreen includes the in-dash navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Amazon Alexa are compatible and an excellent17-speaker Mark Levinson 1800 watt premium audio system is included.

Overall, the IS 500 F Sport Performance isn't the rocket sled you might think it is with its 472 V8 horsepower. It also isn't the most agile but sufficient to say adequate for what it is. The IS 500 F Sport is eye candy to be sure and certainly looks and sounds like a traditional V8 muscle car, but lacks the performance to keep up with the best in its competitive class. However, as an everyday driver with power and comfort those who don't necessarily need an all-out sports sedan will find it more than enjoyable and well pleased with their IS 500 F Sport.
