The fascinating history of the GM Futurliner

(February 24, 2011) The announcement on the Hemmings Blog of the pending sale at auction of one of the 12 GM Futurliners raised the curiosity of MotowayAmerica's Nostalgia Highway.

We had some vague recollection of General Motors bringing "the future" to towns and cities across the country in a traveling road show in the 1940s and 1950s, but we were foggy on the history.

A while ago we were driving my twin-grandsons back home after they conducted a successful weekend campaign to level our home. Sometimes they’d ask the usual question of, “Are we there yet?” But I noticed that Daniel, the big-twin, was listening to his Walkman and Marc (Wee Man) was doing something or another to while away the 40 minutes or so it takes to get to their house from ours.

Sales total $68 million at Barrett-Jackson auction

(January 29, 2011) Barrett-Jackson sold 1,245 cars at no reserve at its Scottsdale, Ariz., show this year, for a final tally of $68 million, according to Hemmings Motor News. The top sale of the event was a custom 44-foot speed boat with a matching 2008 Corvette Z06 coupe that were auctioned off together for $742,500.

We were sitting with two other couples at the dinner and one of our table mates was on the sunny-side of 25. I pointed to a journalist colleague of mine and mentioned that his lifelong best friend is the famous actor Dabney Coleman.

(January 21, 2011) The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Councils announced July 8, 2011, as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.”

The date marks the second commemoration in what will become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

New Pontiac museum gets OK for Pontiac, Ill.

(January 7, 2011) Hemmings Blog reports that the Pontiac, Ill., city council has given final approval for a museum celebrating the Pontiac-Oakland brands. Pontiac collector Tim Dye is reportedly behind the move to get the auto museum off the ground.

It will be the second automotive museum in the small city joining the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame Museum.
