Volkswagen Golf R is a true 'pocket rocket'

By David Finkelstein

Even if you're just an occasional "motor head", I suspect that you've heard the term, "pocket rocket!" To define the term, it generally describes a sub compact, or similar size automobile with a higher level of performance being generated from the car's engine. That said, Volkswagen is wanting to draw your attention towards their 2018 Golf R Model.

Its standard high output 2.0-liter turbo, 292-horsepower, direct injection engine is quite remarkable. With the car's curb weight just over 3,000 pounds, the factory suggests that this lightweight setup will propel this four passenger automobile from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds, hence the term "pocket rocket" is becoming more in focus.

As expected, premium/high octane fuel is also advised in order to achieve this sort of passing power. At road-test with their 6-speed manual transmission and their 4Motion all-wheel-drive chassis set-up, the EPA fuel consumption numbers are 21-mpg city/29-mpg highway and the combined numbers reflected 24-mpg overall. A 7-speed automatic transmission is on the option list as well.

With a base MSRP pricing of $39,785, the car is quite refined, fun to drive, has a fairly quiet interior and is well built from bumper-to-bumper. Fit and finish, both inside and out as well as the paint is nothing short of world-class.

The ride quality is a bit rigid with it's sports tuned, four wheel independent suspension but that's to b expected in a small hatchback sedan.

When compared to the standard Golf Model, the "R" designation moniker puts this model in a unique classification. To help raise the bar in respect to the car's footprint, the all new LED head and taillights with its brightly lit daytime running lights help grandstand and display the car's presence.

Additionally, the front headlamps are designed with their adaptive feature, linked and aligned with the angle of the steering wheel. The R Model has new bumpers and a very attractive rear design showcased with dual exhaust outlets with chrome quad tips. The R's front grille, side sills and rear spoiler is also exclusive to this model.

The 19-inch alloy wheels are very attractive. They're fitted with performance tires for helping with tight corning and a more sure footed and planted driving experience. And if you cross shop other makes and models in this category, Golf R is in a similar class as the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic Type R, Audi RS 3 and the Subaru WRX.

The interior is engineered to be a driver oriented cabin. The dash controls and gauges are well placed. Duel zone climate controls are standard as is leather seating surfaces as well as the leather covered steering wheel, LED foot-well and door trim lighting, plenty of high-end technologies, 12-way power operated drivers seat with lumbar support and large storage bins in the door pockets. On the other hand, the center storage compartment is a bit small and the forward/center dash USB port is a challenge to access.

The 12-volt powerpoint is located next to the two center beverage holders. However, a liquid spill in that vicinity could cause an issue with the 12-volt accessory outlet in time. The eight-inch navigation and infotainment touch screen is a welcomed enhancement as is the premium Fender audio system. The backup camera is linked to this large and brightly lit screen for a clear and uncluttered view of your surroundings while backing.

This model also includes; park distance control as well as pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, automatic high beam control, adaptive cruise control, keyless door access with push button start and numerous other safety improvements to affirm V W's commitment to safety.

Rear storage space comes up a little short but the trade off is somewhat larger interior volume. The four wheel disc brakes help assure a positive stopping experience.

The vehicles limited warranty has been enhanced to 6-years/72,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Also included is roadside assistance for 3-years or 36,000 miles. Destination/shipping charges are excluded with the MSRP pricing — it's an additional $850. The 2018 Golf R model is imported from their manufacturing facility located in Wolfsburg, Germany.
