Ram 1500 Rebel — A desirable pickup

By David Finkelstein

I was thrilled when I got a call from my friends at Ram Truck indicating “I should expect delivery soon of a 2018 Ram Rebel 1500 Truck for evaluation.” Then, I got to thinking, I'm not familiar with the Rebel trim level. Once I hung up the phone, I began some research and quickly came to the conclusion that this truck sounds totally amazing.

Once I got to finally drive it, my expectations were rapidly meet. The Rebel starts with the basic model Ram 1500, but from there, it builds on numerous segment-exclusive features in areas most important to truck buyers.

Of course, regardless of the version, the 2018 Ram trucks in general have a notable rugged and bold appearance coupled with award-winning car like interior's and other creature comfort features.

Additionally, the Ram's bold exterior design helps to showcase the vehicle's segment-leading technology, explaining why it is sought after by consumers wanting to use it as a daily driver, a work/utility vehicle or for weekend getaways. Every Ram truck benefits from content specifically designed to match each model's unique style and trim.

Numerous welcomed features are then added to build it up to a class exclusive Ram Rebel 1500. All things considered, the well received and popular Rebel X Concept Truck that made the auto show circuit was the precursor for the production version of this specialty vehicle. The 2018 Rebel exterior raises the bar with a new and welcomed level of brawniness with an extraordinary appearance that sets it apart from the conventional Ram.

Its exceptional hefty and robust look, large "flat black" wheels and dominating stance translates to a manly silhouette. Additionally, the large twin hood scoops stand out coupled with the flat black radiator grille, copious front bumper assembly and sizable front fog lamp housing. The brightly illuminated LED headlamps also stand out, to help set this delightful and refined truck apart from the competition. The vehicle with it's very muscular stance is nothing less than eye candy for any truck enthusiasts.

The "lockable" rear tailgate has a large trademark Ram logo with the Rebel badging located on the rear panel as well. The husky chrome tipped exhaust tail pipe tips also help support the robust V-8 engine powering Rebel. The side, lockable cargo box storage compartments is exclusive with Ram.

The truck's interior receives very comfortable seating for up to six. There is plenty of storage space, which also includes rear under floor hidden storage bins for keeping valuables out of sight. The sizable Rebel logo stitched in the seat backs with the leather package further supports the uniqueness of this fun-to-drive vehicle.

The user friendly/standard U-Connect infotainment system with it's 8.4-inch display screen is loaded with countless capabilities and can be linked with your smart phone and with satellite communications. The premium sound system shares a level of audio fidelity you would expect in any high end home audio setup.

Standard equipment also includes remote keyless entry, remote start, rear back-up camera, theft deterrent system, HD radio, dual zone heat/AC, steering wheel mounted audio controls, power/heated front seats, heated steering wheel, rear power operated sliding window, 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and advanced multi-stage front airbags and four wheel disc ABS brakes.

The Ram Rebel I drove was powered by the reliable 5.7-liter Hemi engine. This V-8 includes variable-valve timing with 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque. Its eight speed automatic transmission shifts flawlessly. The truck's four wheel drive system is activated with the simple turn of a dash mounted rotary knob. EPA numbers reflected 15-mpg city/21-highway.

The truck's standard four-corner air ride/auto level suspension is designed to help raise or lower the vehicle's body as necessary, as well as smooth out its ride to a point that Rebel drives similar to a luxury automobile.

Unwanted road noises are keep out of the passenger cabin with advanced engineering in sound proofing. Base pricing for the '18 Ram Rebel Crew Cab 4X4 is $47,395. Shipping and destination charges are excluded, they're listed at $1,395.

Since Ram's marketing re-launch as a "stand-alone division" in 2009, it has steadily emerged as an industry leader with trucks that are proven to last with outstanding capabilities, and are now sold in 10 other models in its lineup besides Rebel. Over the last 30 years, Ram has the highest percentage of pickups still on the road.
