Detroit automakers suspend manufacturing through end of month

(March 19, 2020) Detroit's three automakers said Wednesday they will temporarily suspend production amid coronavirus concerns. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) on Wednesday began shutting down its North American plants and will do so "progressively through the end of March," the Italian American automaker said.

General Motors said it will begin "a systematic orderly suspension of manufacturing operations in North America due to market conditions and to deep clean facilities and continue to protect people."

BMW to end production of the i8 sports car, its first plug-in hybrid

(March 17, 2020) BMW is ending production of the i8 sports car, six years after its introduction. The i8 was BMW's first plug-in hybrid. The production version of the i8 was unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show and it went on sale in the United States in 2014.

BMW freshened the i8 coupe and introduced a roadster version in 2018.

Detroit 'Big Three' and UAW form Coronavirus Task Force

(March 17, 2020) DETROIT — The United Auto Workers (UAW), General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced today they are forming a COVID-19/Coronavirus Task Force to implement enhanced protections for manufacturing and warehouse employees at all three companies.

UAW President Rory Gamble, GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford, Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett and FCA CEO Michael Manley will lead the task force.

Eleven states have gas price average of $2 a gallon or less

(March 17, 2020) As crude oil prices trend close to $30 a barrel, Americans are seeing pump prices plummet across the country. On the week, gas price averages in 35 states decreased by double-digits, pushing the national average to $2.25, the cheapest price point of the year, according to weekly statistics by AAA.

“The national gas price average is 13 cents cheaper on the week and nearly 20 cents less than the beginning of the month. These are significant decreases in just seven and 16 days,” said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson.

Trucks-to-trains swap cuts emissions in Volvo cars' logistics network

(March 16, 2020) Volvo Cars is significantly cutting CO2 emissions in its logistics operations by switching transports between its manufacturing plants and new car depots from trucks to trains.

Especially in Europe, where trucks are still ubiquitous in transporting new cars to distribution depots and retailers in individual markets, the company is in the process of reducing emissions by replacing more and more transports by trucks with rail transport.
