All-new 2014 Corvette LT1 V-8 a technological powerhouse

(October 25, 2012) DETROIT — When the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette arrives late next year, it will be powered by a technologically advanced, racing-proven 6.2-liter V-8 delivering an estimated 450 horsepower and helping produce 0-60 times in less than four seconds.

The new Corvette LT1 engine, the first of the Gen 5 family of Small Block engines, combines several advanced technologies, including direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing to support an advanced combustion system.

Ford to end production at European plant

(October 24, 2012) COLOGNE, Germany — Ford today announced a proposal to restructure its Europe manufacturing operations as part of its comprehensive plan to respond to structural market changes and deliver profitable growth in the region, ending production at a major production plant in Genk, Belgium, by the end of 2014. 

Nissan begins eMotor trials at Decherd plant

(October 24, 2012) DECHERD, Tenn. — The eMotor that powers the Nissan LEAF has more than one mile of copper wiring inside. Currently those motors are assembled in Japan. Soon, however, Nissan's eMotor will be produced in Decherd, Tenn., about 70 miles away from where Nissan will build the 2013 Nissan Leaf in Smyrna, Tenn.
 

GM pioneers use of lightweight magnesium sheet metal

(October 24, 2012) DETROIT — General Motors is testing an industry-first thermal-forming process and proprietary corrosion resistance treatment for lightweight magnesium sheet metal that will allow increased use of the high-strength alternative to steel and aluminum.

GM wants to expand its use of low-mass parts on vehicles around the world and will pursue licensing opportunities related to this breakthrough technology. The goal is for suppliers to be able to use the process to provide significant amounts of magnesium sheet that will trim pounds from vehicle mass.

Volvo develops autonomous driving technology for city traffic

The new system, whereby the car automatically follows the vehicle in front in slow-moving queues up to 31 mph, will be ready for production in 2014.
