Lotus Elan celebrates 50 years

(June 28, 2012) Recalling Sixties spy-fi show The Avengers, the first thing men of a certain age remember is Mrs Peel’s black leather cat suit. But the character’s object of desire was her cute-as-a-button Lotus Elan.

The Elan was launched in October 1962 at the British Motorshow, just as the Sixties started swinging. Jaguar had launched the E-Type the previous year, and AC had the Cobra and Ferrari the GTO. Big, expensive, powerful muscles cars. The Elan was very different, and typically Lotus — ultra modern, lightweight, rapid and huge fun.

2013 Ford F-150 Limited — Reaching new heights in pickup luxury

Number of older vehicles on the road in the U.S. increases

(June 27, 2012) SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Experian Automotive today announced that there were 17.3 million more light-duty vehicles seven years and older on the road in the United States than there were three years ago. According to its first quarter 2012 Vehicles in Operation (VIO) market analysis, Experian Automotive also found that there were more than 245 million vehicles on U.S. roads, and that the age of vehicles increased when compared to first quarter 2011, up 1.9 percent to an average age of 11 years.

Ford develops ‘Traffic Jam Assist’ and new parking technology

(June 27, 2012) Ford is researching and developing intelligent, next-generation driving technologies designed to help address future mobility challenges that come with rapid urbanization and population growth around the world.

Ford’s early prototypes of two such technologies — Traffic Jam Assist and an advanced version of Active Park Assist evolved to deliver perpendicular parking — are designed to interact with a vehicle’s surroundings, reduce driver stress and help reduce traffic gridlock.

GM studying driver behavior in self-driving vehicles

General Motors and its research partners recently tried to find out by studying how non-driving activities influence driver behavior in self-steering, semi-autonomous vehicles. One key finding is that driver attentiveness can be improved through advanced driver assistance and safety features.

$425 million investment boosts Tonawanda engine
