More than half UK motorists not comfortable with self-driving car

(May 29, 2012) A poll by Motorpoint,  a UK automotive sales group, finds that UK Motorists would not be comfortable with using a self-driving car such as the Google car. The company polled nearly 2,000 of their website users and found that 58% were not keen on letting a computer take the wheel.

(May 29, 2012) I'm not sure what's happened to civility on the highway, but, for the most part, it's gone. I don't think much about it until a motorist does something surprising, like, well, something nice.

Although I live in South Carolina, where motorists tend to be less aggressive and more accommodating, there still seems to be the absence of general goodwill and the we're-all-in-this-together feeling of camaraderie that was once in evidence on our roads.

New Toyota Camry getting tuned up for 2013 NASCAR season

(May 27, 2012) SALISBURY, N.C. — Toyota Motor Sales and TRD, U.S.A. (Toyota Racing Development) recently introduced the new 2013 Toyota Camry that will compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning next season.

The introduction of the new 2013 Camry for NASCAR competition marked the culmination of an aggressive redesign to provide the 2013 Camry with an updated and more-unique identity. TRD worked together with Calty Design, part of Toyota’s global network design team, to create an on-track Camry that incorporates design elements which give America’s best-selling car its distinct character.

BMW reveals stunning Zagato Coupe concept

(May 27, 2012) BMW unveiled its Zagato Coupe concept during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in northern Italy this weekend. BMW has teamed with famous coach builder Zagato to develop the hand-built two-door show car.

The high-end car show is traditionally a gathering for the auto industry’s leading designers, who often work with manufacturers to develop unique cars.

Chrysler brand takes home ‘Grand Effie’

SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women — voting now open

(May 26, 2012) DEARBORN, Mich. — Voting is now open to help select the final concept for the first-ever SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women. Announced earlier this week, the SEMA contest is a collaboration between Ford and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). Led by the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network, a 2013 Mustang GT donated by Ford will be completely modified using the winning design from start to finish by women.

VW's German union won't lobby U.S. plant workers to join UAW

(May 25, 2012) WOLFSBURG, Germany — A top German union official will explain to hourly employees at Volkswagen's U.S. plant in early June that his group will not pressure them to join the UAW union, the automaker's top labor representative said.

The UAW is relying heavily on Germany's IG Metall union, which has members on VW's works council, to help it organize German-owned U.S. plants because the German union has influence with VW management.

Fusion sounds — Recording the songs of a car

(May 25, 2012) DEARBORN, Mich. — In an unusual blend of automotive and musical worlds, three Detroit-area Techno musicians used a 2013 Ford Fusion to make original tracks using the sounds produced by the car. They recorded everything from doors slamming to the soft back-and-forth of the windshield wipers.
