Rolls-Royce announces record sales for 2011

(January 9, 2012) Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today revealed record sales results for 2011 with 3,538 cars sold globally, a 31 per cent increase on the 2010 total of 2,711 cars. The figure represents the best sales result in the company’s 107-year history. The previous record of 3,347 cars was set in 1978 during the Silver Shadow II era.

Strong sales growth was reported across the globe, with notable results seen in Asia Pacific (up 47%), North America (up 17%) and the Middle East (up 23%). China and the United States were the most significant individual markets for Rolls-Royce.

Hyundai Elantra, Range Rover Evoque win car, truck of year honors

(January 9, 2012) DETROIT — The Hyundai Elantra and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque were named 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year today by a panel of 50 automotive journalists.

The Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat were the other finalists for car of the year, while the BMW X3 and Honda CR-V were the other truck of the year finalists. This is the second time that Hyundai has won the award, previously winning for the Genesis in 2009. This is the first time that Range Rover has won.

Toyota refreshes slow-selling Land Cruiser for 2013

(January 8, 2012) Toyota hopes to breath some life into its big flagship Land Cruiser SUV, which made the worst-selling-vehicles-of-2011 list with just 1,662 units leaving showrooms.

The Land Cruiser has been around for 60 years since its original launch in Japan, but you can be forgiven if you did not realize it is still being sold in North America. It's a big eight-seat SUV.

Ford plans to create research lab in Silicon Valley

(January 7, 2012) DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford has announced plans to create and open its first dedicated research lab in Silicon Valley early this year, further growing the company’s commitment to make technology affordable for millions.

Volkswagen sets record with 5.1 million passenger cars sold in 2011

(January 6, 2012) WOLFSBURG, Germany — For the first time Volkswagen has delivered more than 5 million passenger cars worldwide for a 12-month period. Volkswagen ended 2011 with 5.1 million sales, a 13.1 percent increase over 2010.

"The Volkswagen passenger cars brand made major gains last year thanks to a fresh, innovative and environmentally-friendly model range. Our new vehicles such as the Passat, Jetta and Beetle, as well as the up!, have made an excellent start in difficult market conditions — conditions that will remain challenging in 2012 — and significantly strengthened Volkswagen's competitive position," said Christian Kingler, the group board member for sales.

Chrysler to add 1,100 jobs to Detroit assembly plant

(January 6, 2012) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Chrysler Group is strengthening its ties with the City of Detroit by adding a third crew and 1,100 new jobs at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, expanding the Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup to include a diesel version for North America in the city and reaffirming plans to add 150 jobs by reopening its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, also located in the Motor City for production of the ultimate American sports car – the SRT Viper.

General Motors to conduct modifications to protect Chevy Volt battery pack

New contract with Cobo Center locks in auto show through 2017

(January 5, 2012) DETROIT — Senior officials for the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority and the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) today signed an unprecedented five-year contract that will keep one of the world's most influential auto shows in the Motor City through 2017.

The agreement represents an aggregate economic impact of $1.75 billion to Southeast Michigan over the life of the deal, said Larry Alexander, chairman of the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority.
