Volkswagen gives away three Jettas in a blink of an eye in support of charity

(December 22, 2010) Using Gilt.com as a conduit to reach a target of young, social media users, Volkswagen literally gave away three new Jettas that turned into a charitable gift during this season of giving.

On Dec. 15, the sale was accessible only via Gilt mobile applications and†traffic from mobile devices to Gilt.com was†at a new record when the sale began. The winner from San Francisco purchased the Jetta using her iPad in 0 Seconds (officially, the timestamp on the item in cart is 12:00:00). Cart checkout was completed by 12:04:48.

The second Jetta, on Dec. 16, was purchased by a Brooklyn, N.Y. woman via an iPhone on Gilt.com and was added to her cart in 253 milliseconds after the sale started. As a means of comparison,†this is faster than an eye blink, which usually takes 300 to 400 milliseconds in a human. (A millisecond is 1/1000th of a second) Buyer’s total time through checkout was 27 seconds (the official sellout time).

The third Jetta sold on Dec.17 via Gilt.com was to a man from San Jose, Calif., in 1 second and set a new traffic record.

For the over 50,000 people on the Gilt “wait list”, (a record for the site) Volkswagen will offer a special incentive that can be redeemed at participating Volkswagen dealerships nationwide.

Each Jetta sold for the affordable price of $5,995. Volkswagen dropped the “1” from the incredible starting price of $15,995, further delivering on its “Great for the Price of Good” message. Volkswagen is the first automotive brand to be sold on Gilt or any flash sale site in the U.S.

Each Jetta will be presented in a one of a kind “Gilt Gold” wrapping and nearly $18,000 in proceeds from the Jettas sold will be donated to the charity Dress for Success.
