Subaru unveils 2013 BRZ sports car

(November 30, 2011) TOKYO — Subaru unveiled the production version of the BRZ 2-plus-2 sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show Tuesday. It's Subaru's version of the sports car collaboration with Toyota, which also unveiled its Toyota and Scion versions of the car this week.

The rear-wheel drive 2013 Subaru weighs in at just 2,770 pounds and is propelled by a horizontally-opposed 200-horsepower direct-injection 2.0-liter boxer engine mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

It was developed as a joint-project between Subaru and Toyota "to bring to the world a sports car with superior steering response and driving pleasure that everyone can experience," according to Subaru.

The BRZ — short for Boxer Renaissance Zenith — has one of the lowest possible centers of gravity on the market producing an exceptional handling character.

Though the BRZ shares most of its body panels with the Toyota GT 86, the Subaru does have a few unique features, including its "Hawkeye" HID headlights, optional foglights, and an upside-down trapezoidal grille similar to the 2012 Impreza's.

The BRZ also gets unique ornamental accents on the front quarter panels and an available lip spoiler. Michelin summer tires, mounted on lightweight aluminum 17-inch wheels designed to increase airflow and ventilation, come standard.

The BRZ is expected to go on sale in May 2012.
